"Edges: Between Chaos and Stillness, Paintings by Connie Noyes"
2003-03-05 until 2003-03-31
Hang
San Francisco, CA, USA United States of America

Edges: Between Chaos and Stillness, recent paintings by artist Connie Noyes will be the one-person show at HANG opening on "First Thursday", March 6th. Connie Noyes’ reputation has been growing since her debut with HANG two years ago. Since then, she has gained the notice of such curators as Rupert Jenkins of the San Francisco Arts Commission and Nancy Mizuno Elliot of the Richmond Museum, jurors of the Bay Area Currents show in 2002. Her work at HANG has been included in the Art of Northern California publication and was recently accepted into the 2003 Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. With her first one-person show in San Francisco, she stands poised to become a major force in the San Francisco art scene.

Part of what has made Ms. Noyes’ painting so appealing is the texture, form and color that draws the eye into each work. Noyes begins by covering the canvas with layers of thick gesso and then a layer of sludge. "Sludge" is the waste of past paintings, but in Ms. Noyes’ hands, it transforms into something much more meaningful. Paintings are created as the layers are alternately built up and scraped away, in a constant reworking of the surface. What emerges is a richly layered canvas that erupts with a physical energy and is then quieted in the process of being created.

Her paintings lie in the core reality of struggle and chaos out of which she extracts a sense of elegance and hope. With a background in psychology, Noyes uses the idea that in order to affect change one must work through chaos - to attempt to see the underlying connectedness that exists between seemingly random events. Trust and a profound connection to the process, the act of painting itself, are what activate her work.

Ms. Noyes is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she received her MFA. After moving to California in 1992, she also received a Masters in Art Psychotherapy from Notre Dame de Namur University. Noyes was the founder and director of the Art Therapy Center of San Francisco, which she closed in 2001 to pursue her art full time.

Connie Noyes is a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absoltuearts.com. More of her work may be viewed at: http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/c/connienoyes/
