"Tokyo GlamRock: Art and Rock Featuring GORGEROUS Rock Band from Tokyo"
2003-03-14 until 2003-04-17
Morley Gallery
London, ,
UK United Kingdom
Curated by Siumee Keelan, this exhibition presents a site-specific
installation of Hiroyuki Matsukage's photographic images and Muneteru
Ujino's posters and Love Arms (sculptures). The installation is significant
for its emphasis on syncretic art practice. In other words, it is neither
merely a synthesis of American and Japanese cultures, nor a hybrid that
fuses them in order to sublimate them in a pure, new form. Instead the
project draws on disjunction between and within each culture.
These ruptures
become more marked when they are enacted in artistic practice. Tensions
emerge within the performative aspects of the work: the acting out by
artists of fractured identities in relation to the normative discourses
which they parody. The jarring references, which range from the
mass-consumer world of sports, rock music and glamour pics to the
art-conscious repertoire of Futurist noise machines, 1960s Happenings and
Cyborg Theory, carve out new spaces which resolutely expose the
contradictions of cultural assimilation and simulation in the global market
place.
