"Panorama: A Collaboration Between Students"
2003-03-28 until 2003-04-11
University of Virginia, Fayerweather Gallery
Charlotte, VA, USA United States of America

Art students at the University of Virginia McIntire Department of Art and the Fine Arts Academy in Kraków, Poland, collaborated electronically across thousands of miles to create digital art works. Each U.Va. student paired with a student in Poland to create a joint electronic project. The students established initial e-mail and Web contact with their counterparts in Poland in late 2002. They shared personal information, photos of themselves, images of their work and artist's statements to establish relationships for working together. Work on the collaborative projects began in mid-January 2003.

"'Panorama' is a collaborative project that involves and develops communication, creativity and professional self-determination," said Bogdan Achimescu, visiting professor of art who is leading the U.Va. students in the project. "It is an international collaboration of faculty and students."

The show will include digital prints, projections, 3D installations and videos. Achimescu was artist-in-residence in the McIntire Department of Art during the spring 2000 semester. A native of Romania who has lived in Poland and the United States, Achimescu's works includes drawings, prints, film and digital art. He has exhibited throughout Europe and the United States. The students in Poland are studying at the Fine Arts Academy with Arthur Tajber, a performance artist, art theorist, publisher and educator.

On Friday, April 11, a special event that will include multimedia presentations and talks by Tajber and visiting artists Brian Kennedy and John W. Ford will be held in Fayerweather Gallery. Ford, who describes himself as part American, Mid-western, Nigerian and Polish, mixes archeology with art and leads an art residency program, which Achimescu describes as a fluid network of collaboration. Ford has held the residency program in Ireland, Wisconsin, Missouri, Poland and Romania.

Kennedy is an Irish artist, critic, publisher and art activist whose glass sculpture installation will be exhibited in front of the University of Virginia Art Museum. The installation is part of the museum's exhibit, "Re-Imagining Ireland."
