"Call for Artists: Long-term Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition"
2003-04-18 until 2003-05-30
Creative Arts Guild
Dalton, GA, USA United States of America

In conjunction with its 40th anniversary, the Creative Arts Guild (Dalton, Georgia) is accepting entries for a long-term outdoor sculpture exhibition to run from July 2003 through July 2004. The juror and curator will be internationally-renowned sculptor John Henry. Henry currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Art at Chattanooga State College and is the creator of that school‚s acclaimed sculpture garden. Henry‚s towering sculptures grace museums, sculpture gardens, college campuses and public spaces across the U.S. and around the world. Typically comprised of intersecting metal beams, Henry‚s sculptures seem to defy gravity as they soar above the ground, some surpassing 100 feet in height.

A native of Lexington, KY, Henry is perhaps most frequently associated with Chicago, where several of his mammoth outdoor works of art add beauty to the cityscape, and where the annual sculpture exhibit at Navy Pier, which he helped organize, continues to serve as a model for public artwork. Henry‚s work is held by the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the British Museum and the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, among many other prestigious collections. He is a past recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as commissions and grants from multiple state arts agencies.

Henry is also a passionate advocate of the arts and a great supporter of emerging artists. He currently serves as co-chairman of the board of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and is a past chairman of the board of trustees of the International Sculpture Center. Cash awards will be given to all artists selected to participate in the exhibition to help offset the cost of transporting their work to Dalton. One additional cash award will be presented for Best of Exhibit. The Creative Arts Guild will produce a four-color catalogue of the exhibit with free copies for participating artists.

This opportunity is open to all professional artists and students pursuing undergraduate and advanced degrees. Artists should be familiar with the design, construction and installation of outdoor sculpture. Work must be able to withstand varying climate conditions and strong winds. The sculptures will be exposed to interaction with the public and must have no sharp edges. Assistance with installation of the work will be provided upon request.

Work may be for sale and, if sold during the exhibition, may be removed after a minimum of two months on display on the Guild's grounds. Interested artists should submit a completed entry form, slides or JPG images of the sculpture(s) and a vitae of at least one page detailing academic and professional background.

The deadline for entry is May 30, 2003. Entry fee is $25 for a maximum of two pieces per entry. Additional information and a contest entry form can be found at www.creativeartsguild.org/mt-home/.
