THE NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PURCHASE AWARD

The National Photographic Purchase Award began in 1983 after the Committee of Management decided to make the collection of Australian Photography a major part of the collection Gael Newton and Helen Ennis advised on the establishment of the award and selected the body of work shown in that year. Amongst the work purchased in 1983 were prints by Max Dupain, Mark Strizic, Richard Woldendorp and Philip Quirk. In 1989 the Albury photographic firm FOTO SUPPLIES sponsored part of the Award and in 1991 AGFA Film came on board as a joint sponsor with Foto Supplies. AGFA continued to support the Award until 1997 but changes in the companys corporate structure has meant the withdrawal of their sponsorship. The Albury Wodonga Regional Art Foundation is sponsoring the 2003 Purchase Award, recognising that the Award, in various guises, has enhanced the reputation of the Art Gallery and its standing, as a leading supporter of photographic practice in Australia.
