Caldera Announces Residency Opportunity
for Artists and Writers. The 2003 Deadlines are June 1st and November 1st. Caldera is located on the shore of a cerulean blue lake
formed in the
cinder cone of an extinct volcano in the Cascade Mountain
Range of
Central Oregon. In this extraordinary natural setting,
Caldera offers
residencies of up to five weeks to artists and writers
during the fall,
winter and spring.
Founded in 1996, Caldera is a nonprofit interdisciplinary
arts
organization committed to fostering creativity, provoking
experimentation and stimulating a deeper appreciation for
the
environment. The 90-acre site at Blue Lake is surrounded by
the
Deschutes National Forest and is 17 miles west of Sisters,
Oregon.
FACILITIES AND SUPPORT
Artists and writers accepted for residency are given a
private cottage
and the time to concentrate on their work. Each of our five
A-frame
cottages has a sleeping loft, kitchenette, bathroom and
living room/work
area. Caldera does not charge any fees, but residents are
responsible
for their own transportation, meals and materials. Our
first art studio
is complete, and we invite those who are interested to
contact us to
learn what types of projects we can support. Laundry
facilities are
on-site. A supermarket is 15 miles away. Having a car while
in residence
at Caldera is extremely helpful.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
Caldera supports the creative process and there is no
expectation that
resident artists produce a specific product. However,
people who stay
more than 14 days are strongly encouraged to give an
informal
presentation about their work during or after their
residency. Public
outreach activities could include an interview with the
local paper, a
workshop in a public school, a brown bag lunch or a public
reading or
talk at a venue in the Sisters area. They will work with each
artist to
organize an event that will meet his or her needs and
interests.
ADMISSIONS
Caldera has a competitive admission process. All
applications are
reviewed on a case-by-case basis by an admissions panel,
which includes
staff and distinguished professionals in each artistic
discipline.
Caldera also works with guest curators to offer special
residencies by
invitation. Applicants will be notified of the panel's
decision eight to
ten weeks after the application deadline.
Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered to
Caldera by the
following deadlines:
June 1, 2003 - Residencies September 15th through February
1st
November 1, 2003 - Residencies February 15th through June
15th
