Jennifer Bacon and Filippo Fossati are pleased to announce the opening Friday, May 16, 2003 of the installation by Italian artist Francesco Simeti on the Project Wall. This is the second of a series of projects that artists are invited to realize on the gallery's Project Wall in a space that measures 111" x 130" x 46". Francesco Simeti is presenting a pictorial alphabet, where each letter is visualized by a picture and a word that goes with it as in any child's book of ABC’s, except that both Simeti’s images and words are in contrast with the idea that we all have from our childhood about a pictorial alphabet.
His patterns show images of conflict, crowds of people or military personnel engaged in non-natural disasters and the words are derived from a media-created language. The ability of Francesco Simeti to subvert a given system by using it's own language gives the viewer a different perspective and different possibilities of the reality of spelling, in complete harmony with our time.
Francesco Simeti born 1968 in Palermo, Italy. Lives in Palermo and New York.
His work has been exhibited at the Bronx Museum, Sara Meltzer Gallery, Danese Gallery, Cooper Hewitt Museum, in New York; RISD Museum, Providence, RI; Musée De Design Et D'Arts Appliqués Contemporains, Lausanne, Switzerland and Fondazione Olivetti, Rome, Italy among others. Solo shows include PS 122 Gallery, New York, Galleria Minini, Brescia and Esso Gallery, New York among others.
His work is featured in the current exhibition On the Wall: Wallpaper and Tableau (May 9 September 13) at the The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia PA and in Homeland the Whitney Independent Studies Program upcoming exhibition.
