"Catherine Heard and Judith Schwarz: Visiting Artists Exhibition"
2003-05-29 until 2003-06-21
Open Studio
Toronto, ON, CA Canada

Open Studio is pleased to present a 2-person Visiting Artist exhibition by Catherine Heard and Judith Schwarz, May 29 – June 21, 2003. This exhibition features new work produced during each artist’s Visiting Artist residency at Open Studio. The Visiting Artist program provides artists through collaborative residencies with access to Open Studio’s facilities and master printers to experiment and produce new work using print media techniques.

Since graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1990, Catherine Heard has produced sculptures and installations that are designed to simultaneously fascinate and repel—through the evocation of conflicting emotional responses—challenging the viewer with uncanny images of monstrous bodies meticulously sculpted from antique fabrics and embellished with exquisite hand embroidery. Exhibitions include: The Power Plant, Toronto (1994); Tenement Museum (Red Dive Collective) New York (1997); The Power Plant, Toronto, and Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen (1997); Festival Internacional Cervantino XXVI, Guanajuato, Mexico, Centro Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City (1999); Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto (2002); Art Gallery of Hamilton (2003); and Cambridge Galleries (2003). Catherine Heard is represented by S.P.I.N., Toronto.

Judith Schwarz is a contemporary Canadian artist represented by the Sable Castelli Gallery, Toronto, and has exhibited extensively across Canada and received numerous grants including the 1998 Lynch-Staunton Award. An Associate Professor at York University in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Ms Schwarz teaches sculpture, drawing and theory. Recent projects include public sculpture for the Gooderham & Worts complex in Toronto; the water feature Pacific Spiral in Vancouver; the solo exhibition Ceocentric at the Canadian Embassy, Tokyo, Japan and the Visiting Artist Program at Open Studio.
