Women of talent, style, vision and determination - these are the Divas. They are youthful at any age. They are daring and demanding. They are a sisterhood and a social club. And they are about to grace us all with their art in an exhibit opening May 31st at ArTrujillo Multicultural Art Studios and Gallery in south Minneapolis.
The Divas include Melina Borton, Tara LaPorte, Karlee Mariel, Sarah Stone and Brenda VonAhsen
Melina Borton, a flamenco dancer formerly of Chicago who is now turning her talents for rhythm and performance to paint. Tara LaPorte is a Florida transplant who gives image to her hopes and fears with shards of tile and bead mosaics. Karlee Mariel, just in from Puerto Rico, is spinning her classical art training into expressionist self-portrayals that boldly hit the bulls-eye. Sarah Stoneís classicism is twisted by her passion for punk rock graphic art and comes out free-form, verbal, angry and true. Brenda VonAhsen is a fiercely intelligent master of the human form and landscape, which in her work become a spiritual veil for us to peer through.
A dozen other guest Divas fill out the exhibit with artworks that are sweet, street, savory and sensational.
This exhibit opened Saturday May 31st with an evening artist's reception.
ArTrujillo is a unique 'house of culture' located at 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. The Gallery is open to the public daily from 3pm - 8pm, and by appointment.
