"Call for Artists: BOC Emerging Artist Award"
2003-06-04 until 2003-06-30
International Art Consultants/Art For Offices
London, , UK United Kingdom

BOC is pleased to announce the launch of its second annual Emerging Artist Award. The award supports promising young artists in the UK with a grant of £20,000 to the winner and up to five additional discretionary awards of £1,000 each to runners-up. The winner’s award is designed to cover a year’s studio rental and materials, a travel bursary and the costs of a London-based exhibition at the end of the award period. The award is open to suitably qualified UK-based artists working in two-dimensions who are under 30 years of age at the closing date, 30 June 2003. Like last year’s award, a panel headed by well-known art commentators will judge entries.

BOC’s corporate relations director, Steve Dempsey, said:

"The award is unique because it specifically supports young art graduates wishing to pursue a professional artistic career.

The 2002 BOC Emerging Artist Award was won by Royal College of Art graduate Simon Keenleyside, who emerged as winner of the £20,000 bursary after beating nearly 200 other young artists from across the UK. Given the early interest in this year’s award, we expect many more entries.

Our headquarters at Windlesham in Surrey is a beautiful building and we would expect the winner of the award to mount at least two exhibitions in our atrium there during the course of the year. An exciting aspect of the award is the travel bursary. We have set aside £3,000 of the award for the winner to travel to a country or countries of his or her choice to widen their artistic experience in the course of the year."

BOC has worked with International Art Consultants / Art for Offices in setting up the award. International Art Consultants / Art for Offices director, Andrew Hutchinson, added:

"This is a great opportunity for anyone setting out on their artistic career. The financial rewards for the winner are obviously important but the winner’s raised public profile and exposure will certainly be more important in the long run."

As well as the £3,000 travel bursary, the award consists of a £12,000 grant towards studio rental, equipment and materials for a year and £5,000 to mount a London exhibition at the end of the award year.
