"Dichasium: New Work by Morgan James"
2003-07-25 until 2003-09-07
Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre
Canberra City, AC, AU Australia

Dichasium, a stunning exhibition of embroidered textiles and artist book can be seen at Craft ACT from 25 July–7 September. Artist Morgan James says "… 'Dichasium' refers to a flowering stem that has a single flower growing on the end and later sprouts two single-flower branches, one on each side of and below the first flower. I am interpreting this term and proposing that it may be read on a metaphoric level, referring to the connection, influence and impact we have on each other within the constructs of society."

In Dichasium, twenty six panels of embroidered cloth emerge from black and disappear into white with a rich spectrum in between. Each panel is machine embroidered with a pattern celebrating an indigenous flowering plant.

Morgan James is an accomplished embroiderer who uses machine embroidery combined with fabric dyeing to produce her thoughtful musings on the nature of knowledge and language. She has developed an extensive range of her own techniques to deliver her message through her chosen medium, embroidery.
