"The America of Currier and Ives"
2003-08-16 until 2004-03-07
Amon Carter Museum
Fort Worth, TX, USA

The America of Currier and Ives opens on August 16 at the Amon Carter Museum. In the latter half of the 19th century, the American lithography firm operated by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and his brother-in-law, James Merritt Ives (1824–1895), produced over a million impressions of more than 7,000 popular depictions of American life.

It is estimated that 95 percent of all prints sold throughout that era were created by Currier & Ives. This exhibition, drawn from the museum’s extensive print collection, will showcase 65 of the best and most popular of their prints. The display will highlight the technical mastery of their production, as well as explore the special nature of their appeal for American audiences past and present.
