The Ohio Art League is pleased to announce its September 2003 Member Curated Exhibition, The Close-up World of Dr. Frangst, the photography of Francis Schanberger, curated by Bridgette Bogle. In his photographs of Dr. Frangst, the artist stages himself as his own subject, but circumvents the direct self-portrait by adopting this scientist-persona. Dr. Frangst, gentleman and naturalist, has definite similarities to the real Francis Schanberger.
Both their desks are in a constant state of chaos: covered with stacks of photographs, files, equipment and photographic debris, heaped like autumn leaves. Both must focus so intently on their research that the edges of their vision blur into vignettes. Autobiography and fictional narrative begin to interweave, in this exhibition of the work and work-space of this dual person(ality).
Schanberger is a recent graduate of OSU, with his Master’s Degree in photography. He is currently an instructor in the Department of Art. Curator Bridgette Bogle also completed her MFA in Painting and Drawing at OSU.
