"Piecing a Quilt of Life: World Connections"
2003-09-06 until 2003-04-25
Museum of York County
Rockhill, SC,
USA United States of America
This fascinating exhibit at the Museum of York County of handmade quilts, inspired by Dottie Moore, displays the works of many women who share this passion. As seen through Moore's eyes, the quilt becomes more than a colorful blanket...it becomes a work of art displaying the quilters many years of personal experiences and wisdom. "Cygnes" by German artist Petra Voegtle will also be featured in this international group exhibition.
Petra, a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com, creates pieces founded on her interpretation of legend, myth and mystery of the ancient arts of Asia. She has built a growing reputation for her portrayal of the massive sensual figures arranged in contemplative compositions painted and sewn on silk, or intricately carved in wood. Her woodcarving incorporates the use of environmentally friendly methods and materials.
Says Voegtle, "My travels throughout Asia greatly influenced not only the style of my work, but the way I choose to work. I must touch my work and feel its intimacy as it comes to life in my hands.. That is why I chose wood and fiber as my media. I create art that can be looked at, touched and experienced emotionally. The struggles that are sometimes portrayed, or the sensuous contemplative figures represent for me the deepest levels of emotions that we as humans experience. It is not so much the figures themselves, but the emotions that are captured forever in this work."
