"Karin Sander.1:9"
2003-09-30 until 2003-12-14
Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea
Santiago, , ES Spain

The German artist Karin Sander has been developing a project since 1998 that relates in a spectacular manner the most up-to-date technology with the characteristic topics of the history of European art. The project consists of the fact that people are scanned by means of a 3D Body Scanner and a programme, which was exclusively conceived with this purpose, processes the data received and transmits them to a three-dimensional printer that creates figures at 1:9 scale.

This is how Sander updates and radically transforms the classical theme of portrait, which was one of the main activities in European painting and sculpture. The artist renounces to any subjective attempt of interpretation. The person chooses the position in which he wishes to see herself/himself: there is not even a special focus reinforcing bodily contours or characteristic expressions by the artist hands. The “unlimited eyes” (Harald Welzer) of the scanner’s digital camera palpate, with an unsurpassable accuracy, the body surface and transmit the necessary data to the printer.
