Indepth Arts News: "Drawing Dust - Altitude: Works by Catherine Woo, Damian Smith, Jayne Dyer, Karen Casey, Martin King, Tony Scott" 2003-10-07 until 2003-10-19 Red Gate Gallery Beijing, , CN
Evocative of stillness, a slowing down of time, of neglect and decay
dust settles, drifts, gathers and protects. Seeking solitude and
contemplation, artists have long sought the remoteness of the bush
and the desert, their voice and vision traveling beyond the confines
of their isolation. Drawing Dust is an intervention into stilled space,
announcing a journey into remote and distant lands.
Dust blowing across the surface of a country becomes the spiritual and
metaphoric crossing of the land, evoking movement, change,
distillation and essence. Dream-time spirits exist as a resonance in
the land. Past becomes present, memories remain, sand paintings
encoded with meaning scatter in the wind, suggesting the ephemeral
nature of things.
