Thirty pieces from the Ireland Collection are presently included in the exhibition "Risking the Abstract: Mexican Internationalism and the Art of Gunther Gerzso" at the Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City . The Ireland Collection contains over 350 drawings, watercolors, paintings, theater set and costume designs that Gerzso produced between 1935 and 1940 while he worked at the Cleveland Playhouse as set designer. Now that the research and documentation of the entire archive has been completed, the collection is currently available to scholars, collectors, and the general public.
The works from the collection have been documented and discussed in the exhibition catalogue essay by Luis-Martin Lozano. In his essay entitled "Gerzso: His Formative and Learning Years," Mr. Lozano places the Ireland Collection in the context of Gerzso's life and career:
"Through an awareness of his artistic concerns and apprehensions it is also possible to see why Gerzso decided to express himself through a visual language in which the obvious is made invisible to the eyes of the spectator in general…."
The Art Cellar Exchange represents and disseminates the Col. Thomas Ireland Collection of Gunther Gerzso's formative works. This archive is now being made available to loan for exhibitions.
