"Patricia Piccinini: We Are Family"
2003-12-05 until 2004-02-01
Hara Museum of Contemporary Art
Tokyo, , JP

Featured in the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2003, works of Patricia Piccinini will be brought to the Hara Museum and reorganized to suit the unique space of the museum. Among the portraits of Piccinini’s “family” are remarkably realistic yet grotesque creatures. Are they products of human artifice or natural mutation?

Might these be a warning against the unbridled development of biotechnology? The artist invites us to step away from socially imprinted ideas concerning “normality” and to bring a humorous and radical perspective in considering the large ethical questions facing our age, such as What is normal and what is heretical?
