Julia Friedman Gallery is pleased to announce Bachelor Girl, a solo
exhibition of new work by Orly Cogan, opening December 12, 2003 - January
24, 2004. Orly Cogan is a New York based artist best known for her cheeky
embroidered works on vintage fabrics. Combining a post-feminist critique
with her own personal experience as a woman, Cogan challenges traditional
female roles and confronts the complexity of contemporary womanhood.
Acknowledging the history of the female nude in art, Cogan subverts the
genre's traditionally refined associations. Cogan's empowered female
figures emerge from floral patterned linen or domestic fabric to boldly
embrace their sexuality. Many of Cogan's embroidered figures are caught in
suggestive or erotic situations.
Cogan's recent exhibitions venues include Feigen Contemporary, NY; LFL
Gallery, NY; Marella Gallery, Milan; Paul Rodgers/9w Gallery, NY; Lehman
Maupin Gallery, NY and Scope, Miami. Cogan's work has been featured in Tema
Celeste Magazine, Contemporary Magazine, and the Los Angeles Times, among
others.
