Before Chicagoan Matt Lamb achieved worldwide recognition and celebrity as a painter and sculptor, he had a successful business career overseeing a chain of funeral homes. At the age of 50, after surviving a life-threatening illness, he decided to devote himself to creating art. Completely self-taught, Lamb’s art conveys his philosophies and beliefs. Many of his paintings have figurative elements with a recurring cast of characters, while some recent works are more abstract.
Visually, Lamb’s art is a spectacular play of bold color and unusual texture. Lamb invented the painting technique he uses, which he calls "generational", (multiple paintings layered onto the same canvas). The resulting surfaces are often described as primordial or volcanic. In 2003 Lamb has had one-man shows in New York City and the European Union Parliament in Germany, as well as museum exhibitions in both Belgium and France. Currently Matt Lamb has an exhibit at the Picasso Museum in Spain entitled "Lamb Encounters Picasso".
