The Doiron Gallery presents Spontaneous Combustion: A Color Study by Annamonica Crooks during the month of January. From the artist statement: "As long as I can remember, I have dabbled in artistic pursuits. For lack of formal training in the discipline, experimentation and exploration have been the hallmark of discovery, with necessity often the mother of my best creations. A passion for life and for experiencing it to the fullest has inspired me to rekindle artistic self-expression, as I was raised to believe in possibilities. 'If anyone else can do it, so can I,' became the assertion engrained in my consciousness early on. When the specific decor envisioned for my office could not be located, I created it myself. When visual magnificence of our natural world defied simple description, poetry became the medium."
With an absolute passion for fashion which persists to this day, I was designing and fabricating innovative couture as young as twelve, winning first place in a contest for men's tie design sponsored by Macy’s department store. As a child, my first interest was to become a fashion designer. With the exception of music, formal training in the arts however, was soundly booted to the back seat for me. I also excelled in math and science at a time in history when advancements made possible by the hard won struggle for Civil Rights finally allowed African-Americans and women the opportunity to pursue professions from which they had been previously barred. With a 4.0 GPA, I filled two quotas, and art never had a chance! Dutifully, I pursued the practical course, selecting a career that unites math, science and art. I am a dentist. And dentists are, at heart, artists.
The objective of this display is to share some of my moments of creative explosion, and hopefully to inspire others to discover that expressive part of themselves and explore their own possibilities! My philosophy is: life is short, no one gets off planet Earth alive, and you can't take any of this earthly splendor with you. We are at the top of the food chain, which affords us the relative leisurely security to be creative. Explore your creative capability, fear little, experience richly, find inspiration in everything and live life to the max.
