Indepth Arts News: "Joel Hoyer: An Exquisite Surface, Meditations in Gilding and Egg Tempera" 2004-03-05 until 2004-05-27 Circle Elephant Art Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America
Circle Elephant Art announces the Los Angeles debut of San Francisco based artist Joel Hoyer. Joel Hoyer has been working for more than 30 years with the ancient processes of egg tempera paint and gilded metal leaf, often in conjunction with one another. Hoyer employs these techniques with a contemporary sensibility, creating objects which defy the conventions of historical decoration; his works mediate between nature and geometry to seek a middle ground which meets at the intersection of the artist's hand.
Natural objects such as tree trunks are converted into sleek-surfaced obelisks; basic shapes such as rectangles, circles and squares have surfaces applied which evoke vague archeological symbols from an unknown era; volcanic islands protrude from calm seas of gold leaf. While conforming to norms of decorative art in application, these works are strikingly challenging, and full of mystery.
This exhibition will also include collaborative mixed media works which Hoyer has created in partnership with Martin Freeman, another San Francisco based artist.
