"S/Parcel: Photography of Robert Metzger"

The Ohio Art League is pleased to present the work of Robert Metzger in their February 2004 MCE, S/Parcel. Curated by Zach Waymer, the Photography of Robert Metzger will be on view March 6 - 27. Metzger's works are depictions of chaos, fabricated patterns, implied textures, depth and other interpretations that are most often left up to the discernment of the audience, but simultaneously seem intent on establishing associations with more representational imagery.
For S/Parcel, Metzger's abstract digital photographic images will be situated in light boxes mounted on the gallery walls. Illuminated from behind, the emanating warm glow projects a presence of weight and density. The artist investigates methodologies of abstraction using minimal color. His compositions conjure notions of landscape, strata, and real estate in the broadest sense. The art speaks ideas of spaces and values: In an increasingly dense, cluttered, and mediated environ, what parcels do we spare for more rarefied aesthetics and why?
Robert Metzger was born in Columbus and graduated from Ohio State with a BFA in Photography. He has received numerous awards, including the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship in 1990 and 2002, and the Greater Columbus Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship in 2002. Metzger is a longtime member of the Ohio Art League. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees, and was instrumental in developing OAL's exhibition program when the organization acquired its first gallery space in 1996.
Curator Zach Waymer is a corporate trainer currently on assignment in Manila, the Philippines and has lived and worked in mainland China as well. He has been involved with the Columbus arts scene since 1991 as a volunteer and fundraiser.
The Ohio Art League is a nonprofit membership-based organization, dedicated to the presentation and support of Ohio artists. The gallery is located at 954 N. High Street in Columbus' Short North. The gallery is open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 -5 pm.
