"TV Dinner: Maurizio Cannavacciuolo"
2004-03-10 until 2004-08-15
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Boston, MA, USA United States of America

Opening March 10, 2004 (and on view through August 15) is Italian artist Maurizio Cannavacciuolo's TV Dinner, a contemporary exhibition featuring elaborate wall drawings applied in pencil directly onto the gallery walls and containing deeply layered, hidden narratives about the Gardner Museum and founder. TV Dinner provides an interesting contemporary perspective on the Gardner's Centennial and related themes.

TV Dinner is the first contemporary exhibition by an Artist-in-Residence to provide a window into the creative process (through a literal window cut through the temporary door into the gallery), and as the first of an unprecedented five Artists-in-Residence in 2004, provides a fitting opportunity for an in-depth look at contemporary art at the Gardner and its innovative Artist-in-Residence program. The title and elaborate murals also connect to the ideas of mass media and the arts and the elusiveness and ephemerality of contemporary art, as well as historic mural traditions in Boston and Italy, and even innovations in contemporary design.

TV Dinner runs concurrently with Gondola Days: Isabella Stewart Gardner & the Palazzo Barbaro Circle (April 21-August 15), an international historic exhibition about Venice's famed Palazzo Barbaro and its importance for turn-of-the-century art and artists, traveling later this year to the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice. This season also marks the final months of Joseph Kosuth's exterior neon Whistler's Warning (c.c.c.c.c.).
