Atlanta College of Art Gallery proudly presents A Breeze Over Troubled Water, the American solo debut of renowned Korean artist Whang Inkie. Born in 1951, Mr. Whang was educated in the U.S. and Korea. Trained as a painter, he describes his work as digital sansuhwa -- a transformation of traditional Korean ink-and-brush painting via new technologies. Rendered in unusual materials, his large-scale pieces reference the artists own drawings as well as Korean masterworks and photographs. For ACA Gallery, Mr. Whang will produce an ambitious site-specific installation, posing iconic Buddhist figures painted in dots of silicon gel against backdrops appropriated from commercial culture.
Whang Inkie has been widely exhibited in Korea and was one of three national representatives presented in the Korean Pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennale. He has developed and produced A Breeze Over Troubled Water at his studio in Korea, for installation during a residency at the College. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog, available for purchase during the exhibition, with texts in English and Korean.
Whang Inkies residency at ACA has been made possible as part of ArtWorks in Place!, a new program generously supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Additional support for Whang Inkies exhibition has been generously provided by Korean Culture Services, Washington, DC.
