The CourtYard Gallery, Beijing is pleased to announce the opening of their first solo exhibition of recent color photo works by Wang Qingsong, entitled "Romantique". In Wang Qingsong's latest works, "Romantique" and "China Mansion", he references classical iconography in highly staged panoramic photographs that document - and critique - Chinese and Western pop culture at its gaudiest.
The results of these latest efforts are lush portraits, "living sculptures" in the tradition of Gilbert and George, where Wang may insinuate himself as sideline observer, poised a diffident distance from his subject tableaux of mainly female and mainly nude models. The crowded portraits, however quirky and fantastical, are windows on to today's China- a China embracing Western-style economic prosperity and all of its ensuing anxieties of global influence.
