"Call to Artists: Immigrants Make America a Better Place"
2004-04-23 until 2004-05-06
MALDEF Art Competition
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

MALDEF is a national non-profit civil rights organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the civil rights of the over 40 Million Latinos living in the United States. MALDEF was founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1968 following decades of discrimination and violation of the civil rights of Mexican Americans. The organization was the fulfillment of a dream of many dedicated individuals who determined that the discriminatory treatment of Latinos would no longer be tolerated. Its programs have evolved to meet today’s challenges and opportunities. MALDEF has been at the focus of civil rights litigation, setting precedent in many cases involving school finance, employment, voting rights, immigrant rights and equity. Over the last thirty-five years, MALDEF’s efforts have led to increased opportunities for Latinos in education, employment, political access, and leadership in all aspects of American society.

ABOUT MALDEF’s ANNUAL ART SELECTION

Each year, MALDEF selects an art piece that visually expresses and represents the chosen theme for a one-year time period. MALDEF began this tradition in 1992 when Antonia Hernandez, President and General Counsel and an avid art collector, decided to fill the bare spaces of MALDEF’s various publications with artwork from flourishing artists in the Latino community with an interest in portraying the real-life experiences of Latinos in America. After a decade, this tradition has evolved into a highly competitive and coveted opportunity for artists throughout the nation. As a national organization with the goal of making Latinos’ dreams a reality, we hope to contribute to the advancement and exposure of Latino-themed art through this annual art competition. Artists will gain national exposure while assisting MALDEF in realizing its mission of protecting and promoting Latino civil rights in the United States.

ART THEME FOR 2004: “IMMIGRANTS MAKE AMERICA A BETTER PLACE”

Millions of immigrants from Latin America have made the United States their home and have transformed this country into a more diverse and economically strong nation. Immigrants and the children of immigrants have gone beyond traditional work domains; from the farmworkers who toil in the fields to a large and prolific middle class that ranges from teachers to judges. In this 36th year of MALDEF protecting and promoting Latino civil rights, we would like to have the selected artwork highlight the diversity, beauty, achievements and contributions that the Latino immigrant community has made, and continues to make in the United States.
