City Sand Symbols explores three photographic visions of our contemporary world: Pat Fleisher presents a series of digital duo cityscapes exploring the vibrancy & duality of our Canadian city streets; Katherine Keates presents a landscape series reflecting the exotic & mysterious images of the Namibia desert in southern Africa; Frank Pimental presents a series of multiple superimposed images in black & white exploring the social documentary issues of our society. Exhibit curated by Karl Laing.
For the "CITY" section of this 3-person show at THE LANE GALLERY,
Toronto photoartist PAT FLEISHER presents a series of large digital duo
giclees titled "Urban Narratives" which strive to capture the dynamic,
evolving energy of Toronto and New York city streets.
The duo/image works are presented in pairs, with compositions such as
"Vertigo on Amsterdam" (a hotel restoration in the Chelsea art district,
New York) paired with "Price Chopper on Gladstone" (fronted by a
historic Queen Street West hotel under renovation in Toronto) juxtapose
new /old architectural entities in regenerating art neighbourhoods in
both cities.
"Snowscape on Norfolk*" encapsulates the dynamics of sculptor/performer
Angel Orensanz as he stood atop a 20 foot ladder videoing school children
running around a giant face in the snow, he created during a snowstorm in
the East Village (New York).{*photo featured in the "Skowhegan
Newsletter," NY, 2003}; while "Condo Contruction on Yorkville" (Toronto)
captures the raw energy of workmen building up a tall condo from a five
story hole-in-the ground, witnessed daily by Fleisher as she sips her
morning coffee in the café across the street.
Fleisher is well-known in Toronto as the publisher of ARTFOCUS MAGAZINE,
which will be renamed & launched as CITYART this spring.
