"Ohio Art League 93rd Annual Spring Juried Exhibition: Ohio's Premiere Contemporary Artists"
2004-06-05 until 2004-07-31
Springfield Museum of Art
Springfield, OH, USA United States of America

The Ohio Art League is pleased to announce the 93rd Annual Spring Juried Exhibition, June 5th to July 31st, at the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, Ohio. OAL welcomes Ingrid Schaffner, contemporary art curator and writer as juror. Based in New York, Ms. Schaffner is currently serving as Senior Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She has been working in the field of contemporary art since the mid-1980s, to evolve a unique body of work around three themes of interest: surrealism, collecting, and photography. Among her many significant projects, Deep Storage was a major international survey of 50 contemporary artists representing issues and images of collecting, storage and archiving. The exhibition traveled to venues in Germany and America (including P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, New York) with a book published by Prestel (1998) that reproduces an installation view of Martin Kippenberger's exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia.

The Ohio Art League exhibition will include work in any visual medium, traditional to non-traditional. Seven artists will be recognized with awards of merit, ranging from $50 to $1000, including a purchase award for the permanent collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, selected by curator Annegreth Nill and underwritten by the Simson First Foundation.

The Juried Exhibitions have been the backbone of OAL’s programming since the first one in 1910. The prestigious spring shows have been held annually, throughout the better part of the 20th century. For the first time in organization history, OAL is taking the show on the road.

"The board of trustees has been investigating ways in which OAL can more effectively reach a statewide audience. Taking the juried shows, with the high quality contemporary art they represent, to a variety of venues around the state seems to be a very good first step. We met Lynda Collins, Museum Educator for the Springfield Museum through OAL’s 2003 Artist Info/Expo (a mini-conferece). We have enjoyed working with her and with curator Dominique Vasseur to organize this partnership."    – OAL Director Ellen Grevey.
