Plaza Suite at Union, curated by Free Association, in collaboration with Uwe K. Guenther opens today. ‘Laden Fuer Nichts’ (Shop for Nothing) was originally a small gallery space in Leipzig, which was part of the cultural life of the city. This off-gallery tried to depart from the commercial conventions of art trade by setting up an underground art space. For overfive years, politically engaged artists were invited there and asked to address cultural and social issues. Because the building where it used to take place had to shut down forcause of renovation, the concept was sent on tour and consists now in the construction of a gallery within the gallery.
As a consequence, the reconstruction of the space of theshop, with its white walls, looks like an ironical reproduction of the white cube and hints at a criticism of the museum and its authority. The installation is both an architecturaland sculptural piece in itself and a place of display for young emerging artists. ‘Plaza Suite’ at the Union Gallery aims to reproduce this process of the structure within thestructure and invites a new artist every week, whose work is first displayed within those temporary constructed walls and then in the gallery space. The works of art are movedfrom one gallery to another; this movement highlights thus a blurring of the frontiers between underground and mainstream art.
