This second edition of the International Biennale of Graphic Arts is entitled ¨White Inter Nights 2004¨ as a reference to the summer season or the white nights of St. Petersburg. In this exhibition participate the best artists from more than thirty countries. The organizers are The Foundation of Modern Graphic Art and The International Academy of Graphic Art, with the mission to contribute to the artistic growth of St. Petersburg by hosting numerous exhibitions, festivals, special projects and forums that have become a historic tradition.
The goal of the Biennale is to expose the development and the creative progress that graphic arts has, showing the diversity of forms and techniques, methods, schools and graphic trends of each artist and of each city of the world.
The categories of the Biennale are painting, watercolor, engraving, illustration, calligraphy, poster, exlibris, graphic design, symbols and photography.
The Biennale inauguration was held on June 25th, 2004. The Artists Union and the Manesh´s Palace were the two spaces where the artist‚s work was shown.
It is a hard process of selection to be part of the Biennale where hundreds of artists submit their work. In this note, one of the special appearances was the country of Mexico represented only by women, three committed young female artist: Laura Castanedo, Andrea López, and Serioshka Hellmund. The Mexicans artists received medals for their work, the representation of their country, and their commitment to the arts as a universal language. The attendance of the three Mexican artists demonstrates that the arts transcend barriers of language, sex, and frontiers; and that quality art is being produced in Mexico as well as in many countries around the world.
