"Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2004: Furniture"
2004-08-13 until 2004-10-31
Crafts Council Gallery
London, , UK United Kingdom

Five British designers have been shortlisted for the £15,000 Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2004: Furniture. The shortlisted artists are: Shin and Tomoko Azumi, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Tom Dixon, El Ultimo Grito and Jim Partridge. Presented in collaboration with the Crafts Council, the annual Jerwood Applied Arts Prize is the most prestigious prize in the applied and decorative arts. Selected from over 45 entries, the five finalists will be profiled in a new exhibition at the Crafts Council Gallery, London, from 12 August to 31 October 2004. The £15,000 prize will be presented at a special award ceremony at the Crafts Council on 13 September to the designer who, in the opinion of the judges, has made the biggest contribution to furniture in the past seven years.

Chair of the judges, David Redhead, commented: "Selecting the entries was an incredibly difficult task. We have chosen a range of styles and all the finalists exhibited a commitment to innovation, wit, elegance and simplicity in the execution of their work. Along with all the other judges I'm eagerly waiting to see what the finalists will produce for the exhibition."

Roanne Dods Director of the Jerwood Charity commented: "Once again I am thrilled to see such a strong range of work in the shortlist. I was also interested to see that all of the finalists are producing affordable furniture, which will enable the public to feel more closely involved with the build-up to the announcement in September."

The judging panel, chaired by eminent design critic and editor David Redhead, comprised: Olle Anderson, Artistic Leader and Managing Director of White Design AB, Gothenburg; Tamsin Blanchard, Style Editor The Observer Magazine; Robert Kilvington, furniture designer- maker; Charles Rutherfoord, architectural designer- maker.

Now in its tenth year, the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize and exhibition is organised by the Crafts Council with funding from the Jerwood Charity. The Jerwood Applied Arts Prize is an annual award focusing on the following creative disciplines: metalwork, jewellery, ceramics, textiles, glass, and furniture.
