BackStreet Gallery extends an open invitation to the public to see the most recent exhibition, Symbiosis, by Goghwen Lee. As is often the case with Goghwen's art, the materials and process supersede or share equal importance with the subject matter. For this exhibition, photo paper is the canvas and the photo-developing chemicals the paint; and instead of drawings or colors or shapes or any concrete representation by design, the subject matter is the revelation itself of the subject matter, which is the process and awareness of every existent whether we see it or not, of all things happening whether we experience them or not.
Everything that IS, as opposed to the NOT, represented by the symbiotic relationship of light and dark. And by what IS, he does not simply mean the present, current time-but also what WAS and WILL BE, an awareness of what and that we are unaware-the primacy of existence over consciousness and the consciousness of this truth. The process is the continuum of reaction of the chemicals on paper, just as dark upon light. The resulting one-of-a-kind images, whatever its esthetic value to the beholder, contains the process as much as the product. No matter what the resulting "picture" on Goghwen's photo-canvasses, one sees it-no matter how the chemicals were or could be manipulated, one sees it: the light is always on because the dark is too.
