"TEN: Ten Paintings by Ten Artists Over Ten Weeks"
2004-09-18 until 2004-11-28
Loop Gallery
Liverpool, , UK United Kingdom

Loop Gallery announces "Ten" an exhibition of abstract painting to be held at 12 Princes Dock, Liverpool, in conjunction with Britain's biggest and most prestigious art event. The Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art celebrates the best in contemporary visual art and artists from around the world and is one of the most important events in the UK arts calendar. Loop Gallery has managed to attract internationally renowned painters such as Maurice Cockrill, John Hoyland and John McLean to participate in its inaugural exhibition "Ten". Loop Gallery organisers Ian Johnson and Arthur Roberts are astounded by the enthusiastic reception of their exhibition concept. "It has taken a lot of patience and hard work, but the combination of exceptional artists and an impressive venue on Princes Dock has made this whole experience a joy for us both," Ian comments.

Arthur continues, "Our aim was always to present a varied group of artists representing diverse styles, techniques and career stages, but to attract painters of this calibre has knocked me for six, or should I say 'Ten'."

Promoting abstract painting on Merseyside is what Loop Gallery is all about. Their aim is to reach out to the wider community by engaging an understanding of non-representational art and its value as a language of communication and individual expression. Loop Gallery was born out of the Liverpool Biennial but is dedicated to establishing a permanent platform that will evolve along with the city of Liverpool through its journey of transformation as a European Capital of Culture.

Parallel to this project, an educational programme and website will be produced to accompany the exhibition. Primary school children will be given the opportunity to visit the exhibition and discover new ways of seeing the world and environment around them through paint. The website will provide further information about the artists and the works on display.

Planned is a series of presentations by critics and curators on various historical and contemporary aspects of abstraction. The inaugural lecture will be held by Professor David Galloway, contributing editor for "Art in America" (New York) and art critic for the "International Herald Tribune" (Paris), on "The Changing Face of Abstraction."

Participating artists include: Craig Atkinson, Maurice Cockrill, Terry Duffy, John Hoyland, Glenn Humphrey, Julie Jones, John McLean, Arthur Roberts, Jason Thompson and Christine O‚Reilly Wilson.
