The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club is a national organization of professional women artists. The club was founded in 1896, in honor of Miss Wolfe, one of the country’s first art collectors and the only woman among the 106 subscribers to the founding of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Membership includes artists from across the United States as well as a number of foreign countries.
The Annual Open Exhibitions are juried by a panel of distinguished artists and curators. It is an honor to be selected since only 25 percent of the works entered are admitted.
Winter’s Passage I, an oil painting by absolutearts.com Premiere Portfolio Artist, Melody Phaneuf www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/m/melodytheartist, has been
accepted into the 108th Annual Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Open Exhibition at The National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, New York, NY10003
Winter’s Passage I is the first painting in a suite entitled Winter Journeys. For artist Melody Phaneuf the painting evokes wayfaring by its mood and compositional movement. “I see it as a visual metaphor for the Wanderer archetype,” says the artist. “The minor key quality of the silvery light establishes a yearning and pensive quality. Houses signify safety and going within. The abstract pattern of white rooftops lulls us back and forth into the landscape. We are gently transported into a wintery haven where we meet a distant and indistinguishable horizon– symbol of the future, our destiny,” explains the artist. She continues “For me, this combination of lighting, movement, and symbolism captures a mythic quality, causing me to reflect on life’s journey.”
The oil painting measures 30” x 25” and is also available as a limited edition giclée reproduction and an open edition framed decorative print. Winter’s Passage I, along with the other three paintings in the suite can be view on absolutearts.com at http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/m/melodytheartist/
