"Wax Drawings: Works on Paper by Connie Noyes"
2004-10-06 until 2004-10-30
Paul Sunderholm Gallery
San Francisco, CA, USA United States of America

Wax Drawings, works on paper by artist Connie Noyes will be on display at Paul Sunderholm, with the opening reception on “First Thursday”, October 7. This exhibition marks Noyes’ return show in San Francisco after moving to Paducah, Kentucky to take part in the nationally recognized Artist Relocation Program. Since this move, her reputation as an artist continues to grow. In 2003 she gained notice at the Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy where she took a prize in painting. She was also a recent recipient of a Professional Assistance Grant from the Kentucky Arts Council to further develop her work.

Part of what makes Ms. Noyes’ work so appealing is the texture play, material investigation and subtle color. Noyes begins each piece with a gesture that is then preserved beneath a layer of wax. Working in the moment, layers of wax are built up with time and subtracted with heat.  In process, the simple interaction of gravity and gesture literally creates a moving picture. The results are richly layered drawings that erupt with a physical energy

These drawings lie in the core reality of struggle and chaos out of which Noyes extracts a sense of elegance and hope. With a background in psychology, she uses the idea that in order to affect change one must work through chaos - to attempt to see the underlying connectedness that exists between seemingly random events. Trust and a profound connection to the process, the act of painting/drawing itself, are what activate her work.

Ms. Noyes is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she received her MFA. After moving to California in 1992, she also received a Masters in Art Psychotherapy from Notre Dame de Namur University. She also has a background in dance. She relocated to Paducah August 1, 2003

Connie Noyes has been a Premiere Portfolio artist since January 2003. View more of her works art absolutearts.com/portfolios/c/connienoyes/.
