"A Celebration of Healing: Breast Cancer Exhibition Raises Funds and Awareness"
2004-10-06 until 2004-10-14
Galerie Timothy Tew
Atlanta, GA, USA United States of America

Galerie Timothy Tew and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Greater Atlanta Affiliate, present a poignant exhibition entitled A Celebration of Healing: Lives Touched by Breast Cancer. Exhibition dates are October 6 – 14, 2004 at Galerie Timothy Tew, and additionally on October 16, 2004 at the Komen Pink Tie Ball at the Ritz Carlton. This exhibition will include a series of paintings by guest artist Sal Brownfield and also an evening in the gallery with Mr. Brownfield and his models on October 7, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm.

A dynamic series of eighteen portraits were created by Brownfield depicting men and women of all ages and different nationalities whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. The works are representational abstracts in the motif of contemporary stained glass.  Among the featured models is Monica Kaufman, African-American anchorwoman for WSB television, and one of Atlanta’s most well known celebrities.

Because Brownfield believes art is healing, he reasons that the experience of art is a non-clinical, non-intellectual experience which can touch the inner feeling of the viewer. Audiences tend to agree with reactions to the paintings ranging from silence and tears, to an outpouring of stories.

Brownfield, who worked with troubled children earlier in life, has always been concerned with the issue of stigma, a concern for those who have had breast cancer. These portraits reflect the internal view of the models, their strength and their wholeness after breast cancer has touched their lives. Brownfield has also created art projects for Hermes Leather and Saddlery Company, Paris, France, the United Nations Pavilion, Genoa, Italy International Exposition celebrating 500th anniversary of Columbus sailing, and the Downtown Development Board, Winchester, Virginia.

The paintings will be on display for sale with 15% of the proceeds to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Greater Atlanta Affiliate. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is dedicated to advancing breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. The organization remains committed to its mission to end breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
