Indepth Arts News:

"Rolf On Art: Series to Recreate Full Size Version of ‘The Birth of Venus'"
2004-10-08 until 2004-10-24
BBC
London, , UK United Kingdom

With over 7 million viewers, Rolf On Art was watched by more people than any other BBC arts programme in history. In his own inimitable way he has brought the lives and works of some of the world's best-loved artists to life, exploring their methods and techniques, then painting his own pictures in their style. Members of the Society of Tempera Painters recently took part in the filming of the latest series of the popular BBC Arts show ‘Rolf on Art’ with Rolf Harris. For part of the fourth series, Maz Jackson spent five days with Rolf and three other Tempera Society members, Rob Milliken, Rebecca Merry and Peter Murphy recreating a full size version of ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli in egg tempera on canvas as the original was executed.

This is the most ambitious painting in terms of size and complexity that Rolf has undertaken as part of his show, which attracts viewing figures of 7 million and is said to be the favourite programme of the Controller of BBC1. It is the first time Rolf has worked in egg tempera, which uses raw pigments and egg yolk to produce a fast drying but durable paint, which was used extensively in the Medieval and Renaissance periods before being overtaken by the development of oil painting. It is also the first time that Rolf has worked with a team on a painting, but is in keeping with the studio environment that Botticelli would have worked. Being able to advise and work with Rolf on the canvas, the programme shows members of the team grinding pigments, making up the paint using egg yolk, glazing and gilding techniques. The whole process was continuously on camera, so the half-hour program will be the result of intensive editing! In particular look out for Maz’s tranquil sea strewn with roses

The series is due to be screened over five Sunday evenings at 7pm from 26 September. For more information visit www.bbc.co.uk/rolfonart.
