The show, Evolution: Richard Negre, will focus on the evolutionary process involved in a young artist finding his voice and style. "I started painting by copying the great masters in the Louvre, to acquire the basic techniques prior to developing my own style. Fascinated by the presence of objects and people, I then started painting everything that surrounded me. The progressive discovery of parameters that define a painting (colour, form, texture) made me progressively abandon the concrete anecdote for a style of painting without direct discourse and more immediacy."
"Today two styles of painting permanently growth and build on each other in my work: the portrait and the landscape. Both progressively merge as a single moment in time in a specific location express a certain state of being. The evolution of my painting corresponds to periods in my life delineated by travel and encounters. In Paris, Rome and Copenhagen my work is influenced by impressionism; in Andorra, Budapest and Barcelona, the knife drives my work; in Venice, it‚s pure colour from the tube of paint and in Mali sand defines the work.
If throughout these periods, one distinguishes a variety of approaches it is primarily because the unknown and imagination drive my motivation. In my work today there is no longer figurative or abstract work, purely painting."
