Singapore Art Museum and VW Special Projects are proud to present Botero in Singapore, a multi-venue exhibition featuring 20 outdoor monumental sculptures and over 70 paintings by world-renowned artist Fernando Botero, with Singapore Art Museum and Esplanade Park as the core exhibition venues. This is Botero's largest ever solo exhibition in Asia, with over 70 of Botero's paintings, spanning 3 decades, and 13 smaller indoor sculptures on show at the Singapore Art Museum from 9 December 2004 to 27 February 2005. In addition to the Singapore Art Museum, Botero's outdoor monumental sculptures, each weighing close to 1.5 tons, will be on display at Esplanade Park, Esplanade -Theatres on the Bay, Changi Airport T2, The Fullerton and Suntec Singapore Lobby.
Before the larger-than-life monumental sculptures are unveiled to the public, we invite you to a special viewing session at the Helu-Trans Warehouse on 24 November at 10am, where 17 solid bronze nude sculptures await. The largest of the sculptures, the 'Sphinx' weighs close to 1.5 tons and stands at 3.5m tall.
Botero is a colossal presence in the visual arts world. This Colombian artist, endearingly dubbed as "Colombia's soul", is a heavyweight among discerning art collectors, gallery owners, and art afficionados worldwide, and is widely regarded by many as a living legend who has charmed the world with his idiosyncratic and inimitable style, and voluptuous and whimsical renditions of the human and animal form.
Singapore is honoured to be the first Asian destination to host Botero's solo exhibition of this scale and importance. This blockbuster puts Singapore squarely on the global map of world-class art events.
