"Dzine: Staring at the Sun"
2004-12-10 until 2005-01-29
Monique Meloche
Chicago, IL, USA United States of America

After 3 long years, Monique Meloche is pleased to announce the much anticipated solo exhibition of new paintings by Dzine staring at the sun. Opening December 10th from 6-9pm and continuing through January 29, 2005, this show will feature a mix of Dzine‚s signature Envirotex paintings in which a layer of thick clear resin is poured over luscious abstractions as well as his Glass Beaded paintings fabricated in collaboration with the world-renown, Chicago-based textile innovator Maya Romanoff.  All the work will continue to be obsessively colorful, increasingly complex, and filled with formal surprises.

Dzine (born Carlos Rolon 1970, Chicago) creates abstract paintings that deal with themes of sound, color, lines, poetry, and identity. Dzine has worked for years straddling the very thin boundary between art and music and continues to collaborate with an international roster of DJs and musicians including Gotan Projects whose exclusive CD package with catalogue is now available.

Earlier in 2004, Dzine had two dazzling solo exhibitions in Japan at SCAI The Bathhouse (Tokyo) and Equal Gallery (Osaka) as well as a site-specific project at the Palais de Tokyo Museum in Paris. An installation by Dzine is currently on view at the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery through January 14, 2005 ˆ an excerpt from his beautiful otherness project from ARCO 2004 curated by Peter Doroshenko.  In January 2005 beautiful otherness will be included in None of the Above: Contemporary Work by Puerto Rican Artists at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (a group exhibition traveling from RealArtWays with catalogue curated by Silvia Karman Cubina, Deborah Cullen, & Steven Holmes). A solo exhibition punk funk curated by Shannon Fitzgerald at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis will open in March 2005. On December 14th, those in Chicago have a special opportunity to view an exhibition of Dzine‚s sold-out, limited edition, Spring 2004 collection of clothing and accessories made exclusively for SOPHNET in Japan at the new lifestyle boutique Hejfina located at 1529 N. Milwaukee www.hejfina.com. Dzine's limited edition, hand-embossed box set with full color catalogue and signed screenprint will be available at both Hejfina and moniquemeloche gallery.
