"Life Observed: Michelle Rozic and Anne Holman"
2005-01-03 until 2005-01-29

Columbus, OH, USA United States of America

In her curator’s statement, Holman writes: "Life, in its essence, is a contemplative observation of the events surrounding each of us; a forming of ideas and opinions about how these things relate to us; and defining our own realities based upon those observations." Acutely tuned to the shifting perspectives occurring daily in life, artists Michelle Rozic and Anne Holman utilize linear forms to depict change. By arranging somewhat ordinary objects and transforming them into a constructed form, both artists aspire to discover their roles in the manipulation of materials to create a mirrored reality. Their processes involve introspective observation and obsessive and intimate relationship with their materials: most significantly the meticulous way in which they work with various metals.

Rozic uses the archaic process of mezzotint, an extremely labor intensive process. She delicately sculpts the surface of copper plates to quietly capture a passing moment in time.  Starting with a velvety black surface, Michelle extracts light from the shadows to shape and form an image of a constructed three dimensional still life.

Holman’s work is carefully formed from silver and other non-ferrous metals to build intricate sculptures by connecting hundreds of small, manipulated elements. The finished surfaces react differently to light depending on the given treatment; often etched, polished, crocheted, oxidized, brushed or scratched.

This collection of works is a conversation between strikingly contrasting yet complementary media.  The work invites the viewer to make comparisons and to slow down and observe the artists’ expressions of tiny nuances of light, shadow, and continuing progressions, just as one observes in their own lives.

The Ohio Art League is a nonprofit membership-based organization, dedicated to the presentation and support of Ohio artists. The gallery is located at 954 N. High Street in Columbus’ Short North. The gallery is open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 -5 pm.
