"Misato Ban and Jonathan Murphy"
2005-01-19 until 2005-02-24
Artist Eye Space, Portobello's
London, , UK United Kingdom

From 18 January 2005 Artist Eye Space, Portobello's newest gallery, will be showing new work by two Slade School artists, Misato Ban and Jonathan Murphy. Misato Ban's paintings aim to create a feeling of balance between nature and contemporary life, emphasising the importance of nurturing both in our daily lives. Jonathan Murphy says: "The work for this show is taking the form of something I'd like to say in the shape of everything that interests me."

Ban's landscape paintings create a moment in which the artist feels something very special and spiritual, but which words alone cannot express. It is to do with the supernatural and emotional feelings that we experience in our daily lives, but are too busy to give attention to. She states: "I make paintings to remember the supernatural feelings I experience in my life. It is a feeling or emotion that doesn't necessarily have a meaning or reason, but which reflects deeply on my spiritual self, and adds meaning to my everyday life." Works on display are executed in oil on canvas. They vary widely in scale.

Murphy continues "Figures throughout history become involved and implicit in my work. The characters are at my disposal, and I can play them against each other. The roles given are not always truthful. My creative process and approach to painting is fluid and intuitive. The images I paint and the source material I use demonstrate an interest in a variety of subject matter and visual iconography. The inability to represent in paint interests me as a boundary. I find this visually stimulating and something which technically informs my work. I have a real love and visceral enjoyment of painting and the exploration of what paint can do. The problems of painting and the problems that come with an inclusion of images within paintings create a challenge that always inspires me".

Works on display are executed in oil on canvas. They vary widely in scale.
