"Going Dutch: New Photography from the Netherlands"
2005-04-09 until 2005-05-04
Museum of New Art
Rochester, MI, USA United States of America

New Dutch photography operates at various levels. It is a growing collection of museum and gallery works which, at other times, touches on fashion, design and journalism. This facility with the camera allows these artists to appeal to a much larger audience, and also the possibility to appear in a particular field, disappear and appear somewhere completely different another time.

Transformation and mutation are some of the central themes in much of this work, depicting dynamic moments where time seems to have stopped still.

Many of the photographs brought together in the museum exhibition GOING DUTCH were taken in both urban and country settings in an effort to reveal a more complete picture of the Netherlands. The rhythmic procession of the landscape and city alike produce the impossibility of precisely fixing one's attention on either, rather producing a lulling effect that invites the gaze to enter a self-inducing state of profane and profound contemplation. All of which, in turn, mesmerizes the viewer.
