The Pan American Art Gallery will open an exhibition of works by Raul Diaz, Catherine Maize and Juan Salazar on Friday, June 10, 2005. Diaz will be in attendance at the opening as it is his Texas debut. The exhibition will continue through July 16. In this show, the gallery brings together artists from Argentina, Mexico and the United States. Specializing in art from the Americas, the Pan American Art Gallery features avant-garde and contemporary works, as well as folk art, photography, sculpture and ceramics. The gallery carries one of the world's largest collections of Cuban, Haitian and Jamaican art.
Recently deceased Mexican artist Juan Salazar unites geometric forms with metaphysical concepts through his multicolored small scale paintings. Acclaimed Argentine artist Raul Diaz creates mystical settings of figurative wonder in textured and painted wood and watercolors.
American oil painter, Catherine Maize creates still lifes, reminiscent of Giorgio Morandi and Wayne Thiebaud, in which figuration and abstraction co-exist. In one glance, it becomes evident that Maize is highly skilled in the techniques of paint application and composition. Receiving both her BFA and MFA from Indiana University, as well as studying at Yale and the Art Institute of Chicago, Maize has exhibited nationally for 20 years.
