"Song of myself, by Laura Castanedo"
2005-06-10 until 2005-06-26
L5 Project
Roermond, , NL Netherlands

Laura Castanedo´s exhibition "Song of myself" is inaugurated at L5 Project in Roermond, The Netherlands. "Song of myself", the exhibition of Mexican artist Laura Castanedo, will be inaugurated on June 2nd in the city of Roermond, remaining there until the June 26, 2005. Inspired by the work of American poet Walt Whitman, "Song of myself" arises in a time of social and cultural transition, where new establishments between borders and different general transformations that globalization has carried out acquire greater height; therefore, the necessity to commemorate the inmortal work of Walt Whitman appears, "Song of myself", celebrating this year its 150 anniversary of the first edition, was created as well in a moment of important transition, unfolding, in a clear and extraordinary way, wonderful universal reflection towards the new facts surrounding the social and cultural life of the human communities.

Laura Castanedo, in reference to her work, has expressed: When I work with poetry the necessity to take the brushes and to unfold it in visual images, emerges. In 1998 for the first time the "Song of myself" by Walt Whitman" got in to my hands. Since then images have been generated inside me, getting matured, awaiting to be captured. They have grown with me waiting for my body to reach Whitman´s age at the time he wrote his song. I begin this eternal traverse, without creeds, schools or philosophy. „The red and the black, Le Rouge et le Noir ... Am I revealing with Stendhal's words the clue to her work? No, I don't think so, it is just a valid association, we use words to react on visual arts, and use images to react on words. Laura Castanedo moves in a wide field of expressions, yet each one can be seen independently: you don't need to know Lorca, or any of the icons she brings forward, such as Walt Whitman, to whom she dedicated her present show in Holland, to share her ultimately subjective interpretation, or to feel the strength of the struggle, the ambiguity, and the solutions as manifested in her work. A very personal vision, it is: strong lines, meeting, crossing, sometimes avoiding other, more hesitating, drawings; bordered and shielded fields, whilst breaking other lines to give free thought to wide horizons, yes, red and black horizons...
