"Gary Shaw, curated by John Antjas: Selling Nightmares – Buying Dreams"
2005-07-02 until 2005-07-30
Ohio Art League
Columbus, OH, USA United States of America

During July the Ohio Art League presents Gary Shaw, curated by John Antjas: Selling Nightmares – Buying Dreams. John Antjas states, "Gary Shaw is a character I know from school. Grumpy, shy, dyslexic, humble and intense, Shaw has drawn since he was a young kid almost every day. At the desk with his inks, watercolors, and paper, he comes to grips with a crazy world full of ghosts, freaks, regret and irony in a kind of dark comedy."

"Like the big bang he is constantly expanding a universe that's full of lost souls that he runs across in his personal experience. These experiences, whether they be from work, the bar, relationships, or anyplace at all, become his own personal mythologies that are translated into the fantastic and absurd vision of his paintings.

"The artist remarks on the minor tragedies of the human condition with lightness and whimsy. As melancholy as the subject matter may be, there are also elements of hopefulness in this animated and colorful art. A piece titled “Even when drowning in the well, sister, hold onto your top shelf dreams” offers some encouragement to a down-and-out barfly who floats among fishes in a peaceful slumber.

"This unique vision is rendered in a dreamy playful abstract cartoon-like style  (he cites Paul Klee and Ralph Steadman as a couple of his favorite artists). Backwards type, floating people, cactuses and fish in bars make remarks on the dark comedy of life that Shaw sees. And now this July at the Ohio Art League we can all see this dreamy, sweet, sad vision in an exhibition, so stop by and visit the world of Gary Shaw.”
