As the legend goes - Ovid will later gather it in his Metamorphosis - When a young girl is persecuted for desiring an outmoded God, she begs to be saved. The river God hears her pleas, because the girl was his daughter, and is granted to escape being transformed into a tree. Suddenly, their delicate feet became entwined in roots, the sap began to circulate through their waists, their arms were green branches and their fingers leaves. Of this history, Jose Castillo tells only the last part to us: when all vestige of the girl has disappeared and the leaves shake, still fresh, in the light.
Aerial, made up of calculated subtilities, the painting reveals this mystery to us - blunts in vegetal filaments. It is the celebration of a kingdom that still is near the hand and that glance goes in search of an old consolation. The leaves stretch still sheltered by the clarity a morning without memory or they take shelter in the portion of shade that each one of them feeds in its sine. Isolated or in sudden archipelago, the leaves of Jose Castillo maintain the vibration original, the pulse of a moment saved by means of the tenacity of the painting
