"Form + Figure - Paintings and Sculptures: Julie Schumer and Mike Evans"
2005-08-04 until 2005-08-29
Farrell Fischoff Gallery
Santa Fe, NM, USA United States of America

Farrell Fischoff Gallery is pleased to host a two-person exhibition entitled Form + Figure. Pairing the abstract acrylic/oil paintings of Julie Schumer, and the bronze figures of sculptor Mike Evans, the artworks in the show contrast figurative sculpture and the reductionist forms of abstract painting. This is the second two-person show Farrell Fischoff has given Schumer, and her work has grown stronger and more compositionally sophisticated in the intervening year. Leaving behind the landscape-based paintings of the past few years, Schumer's latest series of works evoke a sense of space relying on purer form, color and texture.

This is the first exhibition in New Mexico for Mike Evans. Originally from Oklahoma, Evans has been living and working in Santa Fe since 2003. Evans draws his inspiration primarily from the human figure, in a traditional style similar to Glenna Goodacre and other figurative sculptors. However, Evans' sculptures have a unique aspect: pleasantly ordinary at first glance, the actual subject matter are issues of passion, suffering and death.
