Proje4L: ‘Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art’ is pleased to announce the
imminent display of Gilbert and George’s ‘Twenty-Three Haunts’; a vibrant,
large-scale photographic collage work, depicting integrated urban images
of street signs, graffiti, and invariably the artists themselves. The
acquisition of this piece symbolizes the continuing efforts of the museum
to bring important International contemporary Art to Turkey.
This newly acquired piece is part of a series of works entitled;
‘East One Pictures’, which depict the common motifs that
exist in the area of London where the artists have been living and working
for over thirty-five years. The recently acquired work will join the
current exhibition, ‘A View from 1988 Up to Now’, at The Elgiz Museum of
Contemporary Art, from September 15th.
Gilbert & George are two of the most important and influential
avant-garde artists in today’s contemporary art world. They began working
together in 1967 and in 1969 they presented their first ‘living
sculpture’. Using themselves as the subject, the artist and the art works
became one and the same. There work explores subjects ranging from city
life, religion, scatology, sexuality, contemporary culture and humanity as
a whole. Gilbert & George were Great Britain’s representatives at this
year’s Venice Biennial and are due to undertake a major retrospective
exhibition at the Tate Modern, London in 2007
